What’s a “Summer Bridge”?

As defined by the U.S. Department of Education, a “summer bridge program” is an organized program “designed to ease the transition to college and support postsecondary success by providing students with the academic skills and social resources needed to succeed in a college environment.” That is, to help recent high school graduates prepare for college and to smoothly “bridge” the crossing to a new and different level of education.

But anyone can make use of the annual June-to-August “bridge period”: that time when the tempo of everyday life slows a bit and thoughts turn to new adventures and experiences. Want to plan a few days at a spa resort? Get into those classics you’ve been too busy to read? Take music lessons? What better time than the summer?

Over the next several weeks, BridgingApps will share some of our favorite apps lists for getting the most from summer activities, such as:

  • Reading lists
  • Road trips
  • Extra family time
  • Good old-fashioned “doing nothing”

Watch for it!
