On February 22, 2012 Easter Seals Central Texas with the help of Easter Seals Greater Houston (ESGH), hosted a two hour open house event for BridgingApps. It was a “come and go†style meeting where parents, teachers, and therapists were able to learn about the basics of using mobile devices and applications or “apps†to assist people with special needs.
Teachers from The Rise School of Austin, Dustin Meyers and Joy Emery demonstrated different apps that they use in the Early Childhood classroom. Parent, Bonita Merrill, demonstrated her favorite apps and gave attendees a bit more in-depth knowledge on how a mobile device can be used as an Augmentative Communication Device. Speech Language Pathologist Mary Dawson, of ESGH demonstrated ways she uses an iPad in her therapy sessions with children. Finally, co-founder of BridgingApps and parent Cristen Reat, demonstrated the website bridgingapps.org (formerly SNApps4Kids.com) to help participants understand how to use the website as a resource to find appropriate apps for people with disabilities. She also had a table with hardware and accessories where she demonstrated different tools that can make mobile devices more accessible.
Join us at our next meeting on Wednesday MARCH 28, 2012, from 6-7pm at Easter Seals Central Texas1611 Headway Circle for the first of our BridgingApps monthly meetings!
