AAC Genie is a diagnostic tool that specifically looks at language representation methods commonly used in augmentative communication devices. It is an informal tool that can help a speech/language pathologist select an appropriate augmentative device for ongoing evaluation.
There are 13 subtests that can be administered or screened. These subtests include evaluating the ability to track and identify an icon, track and discriminate a single icon, identify common nouns, identify nouns by function, feature or function, and by category group inclusion and exclusion. There is also an activity that evaluates the recognition of common core vocabulary words not easily represented with pictures using with Pixon or SymbolStix symbol sets. There is another evaluation of the user’s ability to describe basic pictures using a simulated AAC display as well as the user’s ability to read text and select a target word from a list of four choices.
